Untreatable Tick Borne Disease Discovered in CT

An untreatable and sometimes fatal tick borne disease has been discovered in parts of Southern Connecticut. The Powassan Virus has similar symptoms to Lyme Disease; headache, nausea and fever. There is no treatment for this virus, and it can often be fatal.

According to Fox News and Dr. Theodore Andreadis of The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, “These ticks will transmit this virus when they feed within a matter of hours, whereas with Lyme disease, for example, ticks generally have to feed up to two days before they’re capable of transmitting it.”

The Powassan Virus is often symptomless before infecting the nervous system and causing encephalitis and meningitis. The incubation period after exposure is one week to one month. Survivors can develop a vast number of neurological symptoms such as headaches, muscle wasting and memory problems, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Tick Prevention and Control

The best prevention is to stay away from areas where deer may carry ticks. Protective clothing should be worn when outdoors in any areas where ticks may be present. Outdoor areas can be treated with preventative tick treatments to reduce risk of exposure.
