Frequently Asked Questions
Investing in your landscape is a significant decision, and choosing the right company to design, build, and care for it can feel uncertain. Rutland Nurseries has spent 65 years bringing structure and accountability to that process, from the first design conversation through installation and long-term maintenance. The questions below are the ones homeowners and property managers ask us most often, answered plainly so you know what to expect before you reach out.
Fit & Services
-
Rutland Nurseries handles residential and commercial landscape projects ranging from full backyard transformations and front entrance redesigns to ongoing grounds maintenance and winter services. Our work includes patios, hardscapes, outdoor kitchens, water features, landscape lighting, plantings, walls and fences, sod and sprinkler installation, and snow and ice management. We take on both one-time installations and properties that need year-round care.
-
Our services cover the full life of a landscape: design through our associate landscape architects, construction and installation, and continued maintenance. On the design-build side this includes backyard transformations, front entrances, patios, hardscapes, water features, and lighting. On the care side we provide grounds maintenance, snow and ice management, and commercial services, and we grow much of the plant material ourselves at our six-acre nursery.
-
Rutland Nurseries is best suited to homeowners and businesses investing in high-quality, professionally designed and maintained landscapes. Clients looking for the lowest-cost option or a quick one-off mow-and-go service are generally not the right match for how we work. Our value comes from custom design, careful craftsmanship, and a foreman dedicated to every project, which fits buyers who want the work done right and built to last.
-
Rutland Nurseries serves Rutland and more than two dozen surrounding communities across MetroWest and Worcester County, Massachusetts. This includes Shrewsbury, Westborough, Northborough, Southborough, Holden, Concord, Sudbury, Wellesley, Newton, Acton, and many more. If your town is not listed on our service areas page, call us at 508-886-2982 to confirm coverage.
Process
-
Rutland Nurseries is a design-build company, meaning we handle both the design and the construction of your project rather than coordinating with outside firms. Our landscape architects develop the plan, and the same organization carries it through installation. This keeps the vision, materials, and execution consistent from start to finish.
-
After you reach out, we schedule a consultation to see your property, understand how you want to use the space, and discuss your goals and budget. From there our design team develops a plan, and once it is approved we move into scheduling and construction with a dedicated foreman assigned to your project. The process is structured so you know what comes next at each stage.
-
A specialized foreman is assigned to your project and stays with it throughout construction to make sure every detail matches the approved specifications. This is a defining part of how we work, and it is why clients consistently point to our attention to detail and quality of finish. You are never left wondering who is accountable for the work on your property.
-
Rutland Nurseries operates a six-acre, full-service nursery that cultivates trees, plants, and shrubs for use on client properties. Growing our own material means we can select healthy, climate-appropriate plants and have them ready when your project calls for them. It also gives us direct control over the quality of what goes into your landscape.
Communication & Accountability
-
Clear and open communication is built into how we manage projects, keeping you up to date on expectations and timelines throughout the work. We consider matching our words with action a foundation of the company, so what we tell you to expect is what we deliver. This is especially important on larger renovations where several phases happen over time.
-
The fastest way to reach Rutland Nurseries is by phone at 508-886-2982, and you can also submit an inquiry through our contact page. We aim to respond promptly so you can move forward with planning your project. For winter snow and ice service, reaching out before the season helps us respond even faster.
-
Rutland Nurseries carries out projects with its own experienced, knowledgeable team rather than handing the work to unknown subcontractors. A dedicated foreman from that team oversees each project to ensure it is done to specification. Keeping the work in-house is part of what allows us to stand behind the quality of the finished landscape.
Construction & Performance
-
Rutland Nurseries builds with materials proven to perform in the New England climate, including Unilock paving products and segmental retaining wall systems installed to NCMA standards. We are a certified Unilock contractor and an NCMA Certified SRW installer, which reflects the standard we hold for hardscape construction. Plant material is largely grown at our own nursery and chosen for the conditions of your specific site.
-
Designing for Massachusetts conditions means selecting plants, hardscape materials, and drainage approaches that hold up to cold winters, freeze-thaw cycles, and the region's soil. Because we grow much of our own plant material and have built landscapes here for decades, we know what thrives locally and what does not. This regional knowledge is what keeps a finished landscape healthy and structurally sound over time.
-
Low-maintenance landscaping is something we design toward when it fits your goals, using hardscape features such as stone walls and paver patios that reduce upkeep alongside plantings chosen for easy care. Our focus has always been on landscapes that enrich the home while minimizing maintenance requirements. During the design phase we can prioritize options that keep ongoing care manageable.
Pricing & Getting Started
-
Project pricing is determined by the scope of work, the size of the space, the materials selected, and the specific features involved, which is why every estimate follows an on-site consultation. A paver walkway and a full backyard transformation with an outdoor kitchen sit at very different price points, so we price each project individually. Seeing the property in person is what lets us give you an accurate number rather than a rough guess.
-
To get started, it helps to know the general goals for your property, the area you want to address, and a sense of your timeline and budget. From there we schedule a consultation to assess the site and fill in the details. You do not need finished plans or technical knowledge to begin the conversation; that is what our design team is for.
-
Landscape project budgets vary widely depending on whether you are adding a single feature or renovating an entire property, so the most useful figure comes after we have seen the space. Rutland Nurseries works with clients investing in quality, durable landscapes rather than the lowest-cost option. We are happy to discuss realistic ranges for your specific goals during a consultation.
-
Moving forward starts with a call to 508-886-2982 or a message through our contact page, and from there we schedule your consultation. We will assess your property, develop a plan, and walk you through timeline and pricing before any work begins. When only the best will do, that first conversation is where it starts.
