Wattage follows scale, roughly 3 to 5 watt LED units on small ornamentals and 7 to 12 watt units on large shade trees.

Placement sits one to three feet out from the base, angled upward at roughly 45 to 60 degrees. A fixture tight against the trunk lights the bark and misses the canopy. Pulled too far out, it throws light past the tree and into a neighbor's window.

Multi Stem Trees Take a Different Approach

River birch, serviceberry and clump form magnolia carry their interest in the trunks rather than the crown. Those get lit tight and low, one fixture per major stem, so the bark texture reads at eye level. What Color Temperature Suits Trees and Garden Beds?

Blue spruce, blue fescue and silver foliage are the exception. They sit well under slightly cooler light around 3500K, because the cool cast is already in the leaf, so we keep those on their own circuit.

Consistency across the property matters more than any single choice. Mixing temperatures at random reads as a fault rather than a design.

How Deep Do Landscape Lighting Cables Get Buried?

Six inches is the common minimum for low voltage cable, and our crews go 8 to 12 inches in planted areas. The deeper run keeps the wire below the depth a spade reaches during a bed refresh. Frost movement is the other reason: shallow cable gets pushed and pulled every winter until a connection fails.
