Excavation to a depth that suits the soil and the climate rather than a standard number, a compacted aggregate base built up in layers, a bedding course, and edge restraint holding the whole field in place. In central Massachusetts the depth is greater than in milder regions, because the ground here freezes and moves.

Compaction in lifts is the detail most often skipped and the one that matters most. Material placed to full depth and compacted from the top is dense at the surface and loose beneath, which passes inspection by eye and fails within a few winters. Base built in layers with each layer compacted takes longer and behaves entirely differently.

Edge restraint is the second silent failure. Without it the outer courses migrate outward under use, joints open, sand washes out and the pattern loses its geometry. It is inexpensive, invisible, and the reason some patios keep their crisp edge for decades.

Separation between the subgrade and the base is the detail nobody asks about. Where a base is built directly on soft or silty soil, the fines work up into the aggregate over years and the base loses the interlock that makes it a base. Pitch across the surface is the first control, and it is measured rather than guessed. Too little and water sits. Too much and furniture rocks and the surface feels wrong underfoot. There is a comfortable range and a competent contractor works inside it deliberately.

Below the surface matters too. Water that gets through the joints has to be able to leave the base rather than sit in it, and base material that holds water in a Massachusetts winter is base material that heaves. The visible work needs the same treatment. Jointing material, the product named exactly with its format and color, the square footage, and the cutting method at edges and curves should all appear, since those are the items you will be looking at every day.

Then the parts around the job. The drainage arrangement and where water is directed, what happens to excavated material, restoration of lawn and beds crossed during the work, and the workmanship warranty are the lines most often left blank, and they are the ones that decide what the property looks like when the crew leaves.

How Do You Compare Two Patio Quotes?

Homeowners collecting several proposals this season should compare the base and drainage lines first. 

Two quotes for the same visible patio that differ noticeably in price usually differ because one of them digs deeper and compacts in layers and the other does not, and there is no way to tell once the pavers are down.

Ask what the workmanship warranty covers and for how long, separately from the manufacturer's material warranty. They are different promises made by different parties, and a contractor who distinguishes them clearly is one who has thought about what they are actually standing behind.

Ask for a certificate of insurance sent directly by the insurer rather than handed over as a photocopy. Patio work brings machines and deliveries onto a property, and confirming coverage takes one email at the proposal stage and is impossible to arrange retrospectively.
